8 Rules To Winterize The Car

Cars need care. Good care ensures that they run efficiently and for a long time. Extra care in needed if you stay in a wet or cold climate. You need to fight not just rust but freezing and breakdowns. Be prepared and always become a member of an organization like the AAA which offers on call assistance.

Protect your car for the winter weather by:

1. Giving the car a complete tune up before winter sets in. replace worn out parts and get a mechanical to check that all is in good order including waterproofing.

2. Put together an emergency kit and ensure that the kit contains a blanket, emergency medicines, and food. According to experts an ideal emergency kit should have: slave, aspirin, bandage, scissors, savlon, drinking water, hard candies, food, ice scraper, a shovel, tool kit, jumper cables, prescription medicines, paper towels, and crepe bandage.

3. Get snow chains and tires if you live in a place that gets heavy snowfall.

4. Check if the windshield is in good condition. Get minor scratches and cracks fixed. In cold weather a windshield could crack up if the cars heater is turned on full and it is freezing outside.

5. Make sure the oil and coolant in the car are changed. Check transmission, power steering, brake, radiator, and battery fluids too. Change the anti-freeze every year. Anti-freeze will keep the engine, radiator and hoses from freezing.

6. Top up the windshield washer fluid. And ensure that the front and back wipers are functional.

7. Get a mechanic to check all rubber parts in the car. The door and window linings, radiator, heater, and vacuum hoses, various belts and seals. When the cold sets in be sure to open and shut the car doors every day. This will prevent them from freezing shut. Some experts recommend putting petroleum jelly on the hinges. In case the lock on the door freezes, use a lighter to heat the key slightly and insert it in the lock.

8. Check the headlights and tail lights. Find out if you need fog lights fixed.

Prepare for the winter by putting in a map; torch light, a book of matches, and a candle in the glove compartment. Keep a few spare blankets and towels in the back seat too. Make a list of emergency numbers and tape them to the dash board or glove compartment. These are useful if the phone batteries go dead.

Log on to the internet and read as much as you can about preparing your car for the winter. In case you plan on not using the car you need to park it in a covered garage and disconnect batteries. Cover the car with a waterproof cover.
